Thia year’s New Zealand Cap field is the smallest far 27 years.
There were only 16 runners In the cup wen by Ferron in 1936. The previous lowest was Tangibeu’s eup in 1915, when only nine ran. Since 1883. when the lint record of the number of cup starten was kept, until 1915, there were several eupe In which fewer than 11 ran. There were eight starters only in the contests held in 1889, 1891 and 1984. There were six fields of 10 during that period. But the only time before that 11 have run was in 1888, the year Manton won.
