Eleven Stayers In N.Z. Cup Field

Seven of the 11 stayers left in the New Zealand Cup field after first payment yesterday are North Island-trained. Of the first half-dozen weighted, only Gold Chide dropped out. Although die field is numerically small there is quality to provide a first-class contest.

Picaroon did not attempt the two-miler at the last Cup meeting, but was placed at weight-for-age in the Canterbury Cup and finished a close second in the Metropolitan Handicap. He is the top-weight with 8-12. Kumai,' a Wangatui stayer with a sound record in major handicap races, ic Alb below Picaroon. Kumai has won a Parliamentary Handicap and two Winter Oats Handicaps at Trentham. He was also successful in the Sockburn Handicap, of one mile and a half, at Riccarton last April. Beauzami, the Harcourt Stakes winner at Trentham the last time he raced, and Richetta, which ran him (dose in that weight-for-age race, are among the acceptors. Then there is Sybeau, which has performed very well in many “big races" including the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at the Royal meeting at Riccarton last season.

Even the tail-enders have sound form as stayers. The New Zealand Cup win be the first leg of the- double on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting.

The Stewards’ Handicap, second leg of the double, has attracted a capacity field. There are strong possibilities from Acis, the top-weight with 8-13. to the tail-enders among the 24 high-class sprinters engaged. Other major attractions on New Zealand Cup day will be the Welcome Stakes, for iwo-year-olds, and the 105th running of the New Zealand Derby Stakes. Garnet Queen, brilliant winner of the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham last month, is one of 18 in the Welcome Stakes field. The dash of the brilliant filly, Cicada, with the very good colts, Boundless and Royal Duty, shoud make the New Zeaand Derby a memorable race.

Fields for New Zealand Cup day at Riccarton next Saturday are.—
