FIRE DESTROYS CAR

Driver Escapes A young man. Robert James Shields, of 250 Worcester Street, escaped serious injury when his car overturned, burst into flames, and was destroyed by Are on Sunday night. Mr Shields was driving his 1938-model sports car towards Christchurch on the Allandale-Governor's Bayroad when it overturned while going up the new cutting. The car came to rest upside down, and spilt petrol caught Are Mr Shields was thrown clear, and suffered only minor abrasions. The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called at 10.32 p.m. Hie car was still burning when -he Are engine arrived, but the body and chassis had been bent by the heat, the hood destroyed, and the interior gutted The remains of the car were cleared from the road.
