AFRICAN PLOT
Attempt On Verwoerd
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 22. An alleged plot to kill or kidnap the South African Prime Minister (Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd) and other Ministers was outlined by a secret witness in a Sabotage Act hearing yesterday. The African witness claimed the banned pan-Africanist congress leader. Potlake Leballo, had enlisted him to join the plot. The witness, “Mr X.” wearing dark glasses, said Leballo told him the date had been fixed for a general rising in South Africa in which bombs would be used and every white man attacked. The real name of “Mr X” was revealed only to the defence counsel for David Sebeko. aged 25. who is on trial on two counts under the Sabotage Act. The public was excluded from the hearing, but reporters were allowed •to remain on condition they gave no clue to “Mr X’s” identity.
