Charges To Be Higher

Liberal Party leaders were told today that the cost of political telecasts would be greater than expected in the earning election campaign. The party leaders, including the Prime Minister (Sir Robert Menzies) attended a meeting of the party's campaiign planning committee. Party officers reported that commercial television stations had quoted higher than normal rates for political! teleoasts, claiming the increases were necessary because of disruption of programmes. Commenting in Sydney on increases, the general! manager of the Federation of Australian Commercial Television Stations (Mr A S. Cowan) said station operating costs bad risen in the last two years. Commercial television’s audiences also were substantially greater. Because of this, firms advertising frequently on television were paying more now than two years ago. Political! parties used paid television time infrequently and then, mostly only during election periods.
