MR E. P. SHIER RESIGNS

Mr E. P. Shier’s resignation from the North Canterbury Hospital Board was received yesterday with regret by the board. Mr Shier resigned for personal reasons. Mr Shier had represented country districts on the board since 1951. At the time of his resignation he represented Rangiora borough and Rangiora, Ashley. Oxford, and Kowai coun ties. The local bodies involved may now appoint a successor to Mr Shier. No election is provided for at this stage, although the position is elective at the time the rest of the Hospital Board is elected. If no appointment is made by the local bodies within two months. the GovernorGeneral may make the appointment. No Assistance For Family Planning No support will be given to the Family Planning Association by the North Canterbury Hospital Board either by making premises available or by way of a grant, the board decided yesterday. The board made its decision on the recommendation of its institutions’ committee, which had received a deputation from the Christchurch branch of the association asking for helo. In its submissions the deputation had drawn attention to the extent to which hospital boards in the United Kingdom assisted similar organisations there.
