Miss M Smith, of Australia, topped the women's list ahead of Miss M. Bueno, of Brazil. “If 1962 was the year of the rocket and the grand slam, 1963 was the year of utter confusion," the magazine said.
"Except for Miss Smith’s repeat of her top of the list, every other name considered, both men and women, has a cross current of wins and ji losses. "The very fact that no less than 23 men and 18 women were considered for positions in the first 10 indicates the complexity of the problem,” the magazine said.
