Murray-Jones Win Aust. Golf Title With Record 69

(N.Z. PrtM Asrociation—Copyright) , MELBOURNE, October 23. The New Zealand golfers, S. G. Jones (Hawke’s Bay) and R. C. Murray (Christchurch) became the first overseas players to win an Australian amateur foursomes championship when they took the 1963 title at Kingston Heath, Melbourne, today. Jones and Murray, holders of the New Zealand open and amateur foursomes titles, shot 76, 69, for a total of 145. Their five-under-scratch final round set a new course record. Another New Zealand pair, R. R. Newdick (Auckland) and P. K. Creighton (Wellington), were second with 75 and 73.

J. Le Roux and D» Symons, of South Africa, were equal third (71-78), with the Australian internationals, K. Donohoe and P. Billings (7376).

The event was dominated by overseas players who had time for only one practice round yesterday before driving off today. Jones and Murray played brilliant golf in the afternoon, scoring six birdies, three on each nine.

Their only blemish was a one-over on the 386-yard fourth where Murray's approach shot finished in a bunker. Jones came out too strongly, from an awkward lie. Newdick and Creighton and the South African youngsters, J. Hayes and B. Franklin, with 735, were the only other pairs to better scratch this afternoon, in spite of perfect golf conditions.

The Scottish pair, S. C. Saddler and R. B. Shade, played fine golf to score 74 in the morning but could only card 76 in the second round for a 150 total and fifth place. The strong British pair, M. F. Bonallack and P. O. Green, finished well back in the field on 154.

D. Kemp and R. Taylor, of South Africa, improved eight strokes this afternoon to score 82-74 and finish on 156. A. third New Zealand pair, B. T. Boys and T. S. Leech, finished well back on 166.

The Southern Counties team to meet the AU Blacks at Hove (Sussex) on Saturday, is: M. A. Bvrna. B O’Hart. B. Belly, J W. Keepe. R. J McCarten, J. Douglas. S. Bingham, L. B. Matthews. G. Barlow, L. B. Dineen, B. OHalleran. K. E. Lappin. J. H. McKenna. J. V. McCarthy and J. Nesdale.
