Butler St. Site Favoured

Site investigations for the new secondary school in Opawa which would be begun in 1967 favoured the reclaimed park site in Butler street, Dr. C. D. Ellyett told the Christchurch Post-prim-ary Schools’ Council last ] night. A thorough investiga-' tion of all sites in the dis-' trict had been carried out after the future of the Technical College day school had been made the responsibility of the council. The Butler street site seemed in every way desirable for a school, and test bores were being sunk to find out how settled the reclaimed area was. Dr. Ellyett said. If a grossly unfavourable i engineer’s report was received. the Oaks site in Fifield terrace was attractive,' although some of the surrounding areas were rather old and would deteriorate in the future. The Ensors road I playing fields of the Technical’College would be useful as a playing field for the Oaks school, although they were completely undesirable as a school site. The only other possible site in the district was the old brickworks, which could be discounted. The council was not concerned with the availability of any site, and was simply placing recommendations before the Education Department. he said. Tlie site report, which was prepared by Mis A J. McDonald. Dr. Ellyett. and Mr P. J Halligan, was adopted and forwarded to the Education Department. I
