COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF
Scarborough Park Preserved
If there was any action to dispose of the Scarborough Park as a reserve there would be many objections, the reserves committee reported to the City Council There did not seem to be a strong enough case to obtain ministerial consent to the disposal of the reserve for any other purpose. Below Cost.— -Only two tenders—one of £10.200. the other of £Bsoo—were received for the land and buildings which were to have been used by the council for lifetenancy cottages. Both were below the contract price for the erection of the cottages, and the council agreed that neither tender should be accepted. Instead, ilt decided that the property be sold, for motels if necessary. Gross Painting.— The council accepted an offer by the Town and Country Art Club to give a painting by the late Frank Gross to the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. Avenue Laning.— The Knox Presbyterian Church asked if vehicles could be parked between the trees in Bealiey avenue when the avenue is lamed for traffic. The request was refused.
Art Purchases.— Two water colours in the Hay’s art competition were bought for the city collection. They were “Misty Morning,” by Colin V. Wheeler, costing 30 guineas, and “Street Cornier, Christchurch,” by Peter Mardon, 25 guineas. Gift Lithograph. —“L'homme,'’ a lithograph by Jean Lurcat. was accepted for the city collection as a gift by a group of graduates of the University of Canterbury who studied in Europe in 1962-63.
