Magician Impressive In Trial For Trentham
A wide barrier position may spoil Magician’s chances in the Awatea Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, but the Riccarton three-year-old is fit enough to show his best form. He sprinted impressively on the trial grass at Riccarton 1 yesterday, joining Zinder and Mhor, which had worked away from the mile.
I Zuider (Stakes) and Mhor I (Wildenmoth * ran toeir mile ' in Imin 43 l-ssec. Magician , <M. J. Skelton) joined in near the sax furlongs and the trio ‘ sped in from the half-mile . in 49 4-ssec. ; Zinder blew hard after the ; gallop, and may not be fit to run out 11 furlongs with the best of them in the Watkins ; Handicap at Trentham. But I week-end racing should bring I him to peak fitness for a cami paiign at the New Zealand ■ Oup meeting. An impressive solo trial ■ over a mile was Vault’s imin 43sec. He kept an even pace
from start to finish, and appeared to have a bit left at the end. He will race over seven furlongs at Rangiora on Friday and will be ridden by C. T. Wilson, who also rode him in yesterday's gallop. Spartacus (Daley), Flying Lancer (Mein) and Caplan (F. H. Skelton) made good time over a mile for horses of their class. They recorded Iman 43 3-ssec after running the opening half-male in 52 l-ssec.
Picket (Coffins) and William David (Swanson) sped over a mile under light weights in Imin 41 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 49 4-ssec.
Picket recaptured his best form recently to win twice at Westport, and William David seems all *the better for recent racing.
Valuate (Messent). Happy Venture (Finlayson), and Studio <M. J. Skelton) were not tried for anything like their best speed over a mile. They finished in line and recorded Imin 47 3-ssec, quickening tor the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec.
Valuate wiM advance his New Zealand Derby preparation with a test over a mile and a quarter against contemporaries at Rangiora on Friday. Royal Pic (C. T. Wilson), Moorooka (Traecey), and Scuffle (Stokes) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 30 l-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 l-sece. Sharp Sprint None tried over less ground impressed more than the stablemates Pieca Leigh I (Miessent) and Tremble ' (Brunning), which reeled off ihalf a mile in 48 2-ssec. | Picoa Leigh will make a , fresh start in the Ronald | Macdonald Handicap at I Rangiora. I Seaend (Mein), another fit sprinter for the Ronald Macdonald Handicap, ran away from her stabtemate Faro , (Miss F. Kerr) over five furlongs and recorded Imin 2 4-ssec. the last half-mile in 50 4-ssec.
