TOOK WRONG DIRECTION
Moonee Valley Work-Out (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 22. Summer Regent, the most fancied New Zealand contender for the Melbourne Cup on November 5, had two tong work-outs at Moonee Valley racecourse today—one wrong and one right. Summer Regent was taken to the course to get experience for his race in the W. S Cox Plate on Saturday His New Zealand jockey, J. R. Riordan, having his first ride at the track, took the wrong direction and went on to the track opposite the winning post. He galloped Summer Regent nine furlongs clockwise, the wrong way.
Riordan, used to riding clockwise at Te Awamutu. sent the horse away on his gallop, and could not hear spectators shouting to him. ' The trainer. R T. Cotter. 1 sent Riordan back to give, Summer Regent a sight of he track the correct way. and the horse went around again at a strong canter Riordan told Cotter after the first run that Summer Regent had stretched out beautifully, and Cotter d’d , not hesitate to order the; second run the correct way. : anti-clockwise.
Summer Pegent was not: blowing at all after bis two’ runs, according to track watchers Riordan sa ! d he considered Summer Regent had been “improved a ton” by his Caulfield Cup run. I
