ATHLETICS R. D. Tait Sets Records In Shot And Discus

The athletics season usually takes a few weeks to get under way but four provincial records at the opening meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday suggested athletes had been working solidly through winter.

R. Tait, who holds the reeords in the open shot and discus, showed the benefit of a sound off-season programme by bettering the Canterbury marks in these two events. He was plagued by a series of no-throws in the discus, but one concentrated effort in his last attempt was sufficient to give a distance of 166 ft 2 4 in. just 12%in further than the record. He performed more consistently in the shot, his best throw exceeding his old mark of 50ft, set last season, by 614 m.

W. Jowett (University) gave prof of his ability when he jumped 23ft 2Vi in, breaking the 10-year record by 4'jin. Jowett, a former Otago representative, gave notice that he intends to step into the shoes left vacant by the transfer of M. J. Speden, another former Southland representative, who last season dominated, among others, the jumping events. Canterbury’s women, who, In the past, have contributed more than their share of records at the weekly meetings were more subdued than usual, but C. Lightfoot made her mark when she threw the javelin 107 ft 6*4in for a new record.

The performances in the track events were less impressive, but few, if any, had intentions of recording outstanding times. D. Mackenzie, who heads an impressive string of University sprinters, just managed to head off W. M. Walls, of Toe H, in the open 75 yards, in B.lsec, a time to be expected at this stage of the season. Walls, who looked alert and strong, cleared out in the 220 yards hurdles, recording a good time of 26sec. G. Hack, who has been upset in the last season or two by injuries, strode effortlessly in the open 660 yards and was never seriously challenged at any stage, although his Technical club-mate, D. Minards, came through at the finish with a strong sprint which reduced Hack’s lead by a few yards. Minards, a determined runner who never gives in, should do well again in the quarter-mile if his finishing burst on Saturday was an indication. Good Time The time of 4min 19.2 sec in the open mile was a good one, and the winner, B. Smith, of Technical, had to run faster than he possibly intended at the end to keep ahead of D. Clements (University), who was only .ssec slower. Some of the other runners, who expected a more moderate pace in keeping with the traditions of opening day, found the leaders’ enthusiasm too much, and the field gradually spread to more relaxed proportions. K. Simpson, of Toe H, was

one of the best in the junior section. He was part of a good relay team and his long jump of 21ft was a good effort by any standard. R. Reekie, of Technical, won the three* quarter mile without too much of an effort, and A. McIntyre (High Schol Old Boys) threw a creditable 153 ft 4(jin in the discus. V. Young made a clean sweep of the 80 metres hurdles, the shot, and the high jump in the women's open section. She threw the discus 153 ft 6J in, a hefty effort, and her sft 3in in the high jump was, comparatively, almost as good.
