SMUGGLED CAR

Retired Man Convicted (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. Graham Routh Canavan, a retired publisher, has been convicted in the Magistrate's Court by Mr J. A. Wicks, S.M., of smuggling a Daimler Benz motor-car, purchased by him in Germany aind imported into New Zealand. He was fined £lOO and costs £1 10s plus solicitor's fee, £l5 15s. The charges were heard in July. There were a number of charges, only one of which was heard, the others all being adjourned. “I am satisfied that Canavan made an erroneous declaration, which itself is an offence against Section 211 of the Customs Act, 1913, and that this brings into operation the provisions of Section 277 of the act whereby an intent to defraud the revenue of customs is presumed, unless the contrary is proved. “No evidence was given to prove the contrary, and I therefore hold that the defendant must be convicted of the charge of smuggling," said the judgment.
