FRENCH PASS FIRE

Water, Power, Phones Cut (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, October 20. When a big woodshed at French Pass was destroyed by fire last night, the small settlement was left without welter, electricity, and telephone communications. The fire also disrupted the telephone service to D’Urville Island when the lines, which crossed above the woolshed, were burned through. An electric generator and pumping equipment that served the French Pass community of eight houses was kept in the shed. Temporary pumping equipment was installed today but the settlement was stall without electricity tonight. Settlers strung a temporary line to restore the telephone connexion.

There was no fire-fighting equipment available to combat the fierce blaze which developed shortly before 9 p.m There was no wind and the fire did not spread to nearby buildings.
