SECRETARY OF A.S.R.S.
Nomination “Not Acceptable”
The returning officer of the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. Mr A. Cairns, said last evening that he could not legally accept the nomination of Mr A. E. Armstrong as a candidate for the secretaryship of the branch while Mr Armstrong was under suspension. Mr Cairns was commenting on a report that Mr Armstrong was allowing his name to go forward as a candidate for the secretaryship. Mr Armstrong confirmed that he had allowed his name to go in, because from 100 to 200 had signed a request that he be nominated for the secretaryship. Mr Armstrong said he had decided to take legal action against the National Council of the A.S.R.S., to challenge the validity of his suspension at the time he was a candidate for the national presidency of the A.S.R S
The chairman at the Canterbury branch of the A SR S . Mr T Sweeney, said Mr Armstrong had been told that his suspension had not been lifted as far as the Canterbury branch knew.
