PROBLEM OF DUST

Health Hazard From Building

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 16.

Dust from excavations in building projects was a health hazard, the Wellington Tuberculosis Association’s annual meeting was told today.

Excavations were carried out indiscriminately with no thought for the health hazard that existed for the public, said the chairman of the executive, Mr C. Meachen. Effective measures needed to be taken against such things as dirty handling of food to prevent chest diseases and often deaths. The high incidence of tuberculosis as found among barmen in Dunedin in a health survey was additional evidence that the end of the road in control and eradication of tuberculosis had not been reached. A member of the executive, Dr. A. Webb, said: “We still have a serious nest of tuberculosis in the community we can’t reach.”
