TROTTING AT NIGHT
Extra Police On Duty
Hiere will be more policemen at night trotting meetings at Addington than at daylight meetings. The police and the trotting clubs are determined to prevent any larrikinism at the night meet-
ings. From the police point of view, the trial meeting last evening was a rehearsal in miniature. Only about 5000 persons were present. It is expected that 25,000 or more patrons will attend the first night meeting proper on November 20. No liquor will be sold on the course after 6 p.m. At night race meetings in other centres, near beef (underproof) is sold from bars after 6 pan. The bars at Addington will close at 6 p.m. The bars will be opened at 4.30 p.m. and buffet meals and pies will be available from 5.30 p.m. Hie first race will be at 6.45 p.m. At Auckland and Forbury night meetings some trouble has been experienced with teen-agers in car parks. Beer bottles have been broken and other acts of vandalism have occurred.
The car parks at Addington are adequately lit. It is now an offence under the Police Offences Act to leave a bottle on the ground in a public place, whether it is broken or not. The local trotting club and the police are determined to enforce the law in this respect to the letter. Public areas will be well patrolled. Persons under the age of 21, are not legally entitled to bet, or to buy liquor on a
No traffic problems were encountered at last evening's meeting, but the Transport Department and local authorities are rather concerned at a possible bottleneck at the intersection of Clarence and Blenheim roads when the night meetings begin in earnest. It is considered that the intersection is not sufficiently well lit tor a traffic officer to be on potot duty there. The clubs are increasing their own security arrangements because totalisators will be operating at several points on the course, and police supervision will also be strengtliened.
