Planning The Bathroom
Convenience, comfort, and beauty could be planned as much for the bathroom as for any other room in the home, Miss Prudence Rothenberg said in a recent “Design for Living” lecture. A beauty bar, incorporating the washbasin and running the whole length of the room was practical and pleasing. Miss Rothenberg said. One of the cupboards could have slotted bars, ideal for hanging light laundry such as stockings. A protected lowwatt bulb inside this cupboard would facilitate drying. The cupboard for linen should open from the hall for added convenience. Another cupboard could be used for cleaning materials, soaps, and disinfectants, and drawers should be provided for makeup and personal items. Room should be left for seating at the beauty bar, even if this meant forfeiting cupboard space.
Bar heaters, properly protected, or infra-red lamps could be used for heating. Lighting could be by warm, tinted fluorescent lights. A
localised light was necessary over a vanity bar, and for this a lamp on a moveable bracket was ideal, dear glass windows near the ceiling would provide additional natural light. Miss Rothenberg suggested attractive ornaments, dried flower decoration, or pot plants for the bathroom. “Strive for originality, but do not clutter the room with needless ornament,” she said.
Window treatment was important. Plastic curtaining was serviceable, but it did not give a luxurious or warm appearance. Towelling was practical and attractive for curtains. Chintz was serviceable, but would go limp unless of a very good quality.
