OLD AND NEW IN SKOPJE

Visit Before Earthquake Skopje, the Jugoslavian city destroyed in the recent! earthquake disaster, was a! strange mixture of old and new. said Miss R. M. Jull at a Canterbury Travel Club morning tea meeting yesterday. Miss Jull, who was in Skopje about a year before the earthquake, said the many new buildings included a university and blocks of flats.

Contrasting with the modem parts of the city were the older dirtricts. Half the city was still Turkish, and many women were seen wearing long silky trousers caught at the ankles. Miss Jull had also visited the gypsy quarter. Vocal items were given by Miss Sonya Black at the meetings, accompanied by Miss Nell Billcliff. Mrs A. M. Vile thanked the speaker and artists.

Mrs A. F. Mathews welcomed guests, who included Mrs P Watts, of Sydney: Miss R. Mills (Nelson Travel Club); Mrs G. Matheson and Misses L. Reed and S. Reed i Southland Travel Club); Mrs R, B Wilson (Winton): Mrs R. C. Rutherford (North Taieri); Mrs Rattray Fraser * Wellington); Mrs M. Maconie (Timaru), and Mrs J. Buzan (Oamaru). Mrs W. Ellis was welcomed as a new member.
