Basketball S.I. SCHOOLS TOURNEY

Cashmere In Final

(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, Sept. 12. Southland G.H.S. defeated Cashmere H.S., 41-28, to win the South Island secondary schoolgirls’ basketball tournament in Timaru today. Both teams produced patches of brilliant play, but Southland's positional play and ball handling was superior. M. Gardiner, Southland’s goal attack, scored most of her team’s goals. Cashmere played solidly, using longer and sometimes less accurate passing. Lois French, Cashmere’s goal attack, frequently opened up play in her goal area by drawing the defence away. Results of today’s games were:— Section Play-off.—Southland G.H.S. 32, Nelson College 27; South Otago H.S. 28, St. Catherine’s 27. Semi-finals.—Southland G.H.S. 42, South Otago H.S. 24; Cashmere H.S. 35. Waimea College 34. Following the game between Waimea and Cashmere, a protest was lodged by Waimea, but was disallowed by the executive committee.
