PROPERTY CARE
Persons Sent To Institutions (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON Sept. 11. The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) is doubtful whether special provisions are necessary to make it mandatory for a magistrate, in making an order for the committal of a person to an institution, to ensure that the person’s property is in the hands of a suitable trustee. Replying to a question by Mr N. E. Kirk (Opp., Lyttelton) in Parliament today, he said that from inquiries undertaken by toe Health Department in 1960, few difficulties were apparent in toe administration and protection of property of persons committed under section 126 of toe Health Act. Generally, co-operation between the police, relatives, or solicitors was sufficient to resolve the care of property. He was doubtful whether provision would be relevant under the Health Act. Other statutes authorised the detention of persons, and did not include provisions for property protection. Under toe Aged and Infirm Persons Protection Act. however, there were certain provisions for toe protection of property, with jurisdiction conferred cm toe Supreme Court.
