Taxation
Sir, —The increase or gradient of the tax scale on incomes in New Zealand is too steep. I understand that the maximum of 13s in the £ can be reached in New Zealand at £3500, whereas in England the maximum tax applies at £6OOO. I realise that a colossal and ever-in-creasing sum (according to the whims of politicians) for social security alone has to be recovered by way of taxation. Our political leaders are forever appealing for harder work, greater output, etc., yet this steep tax scale is a positive block to any incentive in this matter. For this reason, numerous persons with much ability are not prepared to work harder, for every £ of additional income carries a punitive tax. Every politician has good reason and an obligation to have a good look at the present steep tax scale.—Yours, etc., M.V.M. September 10, 1963.
