RESTORATION OF CHURCH

Thanksgiving Services

Thanksgiving services for the restoration of St. Paul's Church, Papanui, will be heM in. the church on Sunday. A year ago parishioners answered, an appeal in a pamphlet, headed “St. Pauli’s is falling down well almost,” giving money to restore the 87-year-old church. In the last six months £4500 has been spent renewing the church walls and windows, building a large new vestry at the west end, laying a new drive, and painting the church inside and out. There is still more work to be done—the organ has to be renovated and new lighting and seating installed. Parishioners who have not given money for the restoration of the church will be asked to do so on September 21, when houses in the parish will be visited. St. Paul’s has been a landmark in the district since 1876 when it replaced a smaller church built in 1852. St. Paul’s was built as a village church amidst a two-and-a-half acre cemetery at the cost of £1856. The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. W. A. Pyatt) will preach at the morning thanksgiving service, and the vicar of Fendalton (the Rev. M. L. Underhill) will preach at the evening service.
