Elmwood Has Big Drop

Although the drop in totail membership was a small one, clubs would do well to take stock of the position, said Miss D. Brown at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Swimming Centre last night. Miss Brown was commenting on the details of club membership in the annual report, which showed a decrease of 47 on the 1961-62 total Canterbury, she said, was one of only four centres in the country to show a decrease in membership Other centres had made big advances and Canterbury was now only fifth numerically in New Zealand. The total club membership is now 1870. The chief increases shown were by Wharenui. 304 to 376; Papanui, 176 to 231; and Fendaiton, 64 to 103, but Elmwood’s figure slumped from 305 to 104. Third Term Mr M. R. Duckmanton. of the Christchurch club, was elected president for a third term. There were few changes in personnel among the officers, except in the delegates' representatives to the management committee. Three of the six positions were gained by new members. Messrs J. V. Slack (Papanui), J. H. Drummond 'Beckenham) and A. W Crowe (Kaiapoi). The other members elected were Mrs R. R. Hay (Elmwood), Mr J. H Johnson (Fendalton) and Mr D M. Stuart (Papanui). Mr J. A. Lee, one of the three selectors who chose Canterbury’s highly successful team for last season's national championships, was not available for reappointment.

Other officers elected were: —Vice-president, Mr E. C. Stentiford <St. Albans); immediate past president. Mr G R. Laurie (Christchurch); secretary-treasurer. Mr T J. Whitta (Riccarton); local officer, Mr D. M. Stuart (Papanuii; delegate to the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association's council, Mr Stentiford; handicapper, Mr R. W. Luscombe (Riccarton); representative to Water Polo Control Board. Mr S. Williams (St. Albans); selectors, Messrs D W Cain, R. W. Luscombe, B. Mackenzie.
