FIRES IN TUNNEL

Rapid Alert System

As soon as a fire extinguisher is lifted in the Christchurch-Lyttelton road tunnel a fire call will be transmitted to the Central Fire Station by equipment which has been bought by the tunnel authority. By a code* system the brigade will be able to tell the position of the fire call in the tunnel, and direct an engine from either the Woolston or Lyttelton stations.

The two transmitters which alert the brigade cost £35 15s each. '

Thera will also be a direct telephone line between the tunnel-control room and the brigade watchroom.

On the recommendation of the Ministry of Works, the authority accepted a tender of £ 1566 for the supply of 145 fire-extinguishers.
