Hereford Bull Sales
“The Press” Special Service GISBORNE. September 6. Sixty-four Hereford stud bulls were sold at auction under the auspices of the Gisborne Stud Beef Cattle Breeders' Association for a total of 13.965 gns at the annual breed fixture. The catalogue included a selection from those animals not offered at the recent national sale. The trophy for the best Jed bull was won by T L. Hine, with Taurau Valley Hero which subsequently sold for 460gns, Second and third places in the led bull section were taken by R. F. Hutchinscm with Waihuka Echo 67th and 72nd respectively. These animals sold at 476gns and 400gns. Top award for un-led bulls went to F E. Humphreys and Son. pioneers of the Polled Hereford breed in New Zealand. whose winning bull Motea Gem sold at 260gns. Mamaku Gem from the same stud was placed second and made 250 gns. Hutchinson bulls, the homed Waihuka Mixer Ist, and the polled Waihuka Argo 7th, filled third and fourth places, the first-mentioned making the best price of the day ait 580gns. Averages for the day were: R. F Hutchinson. 264*2gns for 19 bulls (1962. 193gns for 14); T. L. Hine, 260gns for 13 (1962, 192 gns for eight); F. E. Humphreys and Son. 249gns for 10 (1962, 222 gns for seven); T. J. Harris and Son 156 gns for eight (1962 183 gns for eight); Mokairau Station. 150gns for three (1962, 180 gns for two); J. Holdsworth, 124Jgns for 11 (1962. 131 ’ 2 gn>s for three). Nine bulls withdrawn from sale during the day were almost all from studs which have not gained national prominence.
