Kite Dangers

The Municipal Electricity Department of the Christchurch City Council has again found it necessary to warn parents of the danger to children who fly kites near power lines. The M.E.D. does so not because of the nuisance caused by tangled kites but because of its responsibility to protect citizens from electrical dangers. The advice it gives is simple. Children should be warned against flying kites near power lines and should be given some supervision to ensure that they

’take notice of what they are told. If, however, a kite should become entangled with overhead wires, a child should understand that he must not touch the string again. Heavy voltages are carried on some lines; but low-tension wires to houses are dangerous, too. At this time of the year children enjoy flying their kites, a healthy and normally harmless pastime. Parents can make it also a safe pastime by insisting that kites are kept away from potentially fatal contact with power lines.
