Universities Team Beats Australians

(N.Z, Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE, August 25. In 80 degrees temperatures and on a hard ground, the touring New Zealand Universities men’s hockey team gave an excellent display of controlled hockey to beat Australian Universities, 2-1, at Brisbane on Saturday.

The tourists were superior in every phase of the game and their short passing and control was a contrast to the hard-hitting and destructive play of the Australians. L. Anderson played superbly in goal, bringing off several fine saves, while the

half-time after Read had broken clear brilliantly and shot past the keeper. In the second half McWatters equalised from a penalty corner but New Zealand remained in complete control. With 10 minutes left Read and Best burst clear, and after some excellent shortpassing, Best netted the winning goal. Manawatu Winner (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N., Aug. 25. Manawatu beat Wairarap-a, 21. in a representative hockey match at Palmerston North on Saturday. For Manawatu, J. Cullen and R. Gordon scored, while G. Percy replied for Watrarapa.
