Interest In Cheap Meals

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

LONDON, August 25. The West Hartlepool Health Department has received more than 100 letters in the last three days in response to its “dole diet” menu for feeding a family of four on £4 2s 8d a week. The medical officer, Dr. Hamilton Milligan, said most interest in the diet had come from better-off areas. "The number of letters seemed to indicate that for young people

with families buying their own homes, higher mortgage rates are eating into the family food budget,” he said. One typical letter, he said, was from a young Staffordshire wife stating that she and her husband were starting a threeyear teacher training course and asking: “Can you please give us some idea how to feed ourselves and our three children on the grants we receive.”
