RACING FAST-RUN STEEPLES TO DAVETT
Milers Outclassed By Tatua “Th* Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND, August 25. A record run over the country* by Davett and Tatua’s brilliant mile win at the expense of Summer Regent and 24 others in the Jeilicoe Handicap made a memorable occasion of the Pakuranga Hunt races at Ellerslie yesterday. In the Hunt Cup Davett went six minutes for the three miles and 20 fences. Tatua, with 10-1 and on the eve of a trip to Melbourne, took the Jeilicoe like a champion.
Davett, a nine-year-old, had not previously shown form of such account. Just the other week, on heavy ground, he could get only fifth in the Peria Steeplechase at Matamata. This time, on unusually firm footing for the time of the year, he ran very prominently throughout the last mile.
No Boy. a 10-year-old and Johnny Dee ran Davett closest at the post under pretty hard pressure, and How Much came fourth. How Much was the best of three visitors in the race. The other two. Dawn Chorus and Musketeer, came seventh and ninth respectively. Musketeer made a hot pace and had run himself out with half a mile to go. Dawn Chorus was closest when third with a mile and a quarter to run and about seventh over the last six furlongs. Davett won two hurdle races this time last year in moderate company and a couple of minor steeplechases in the winter Just finishing. A rugged bay gelding, by Blue Coral from Air an a, he is owned and trained at Te Arolia by Mr J. B. McAllister. 25-Length Wiu The best gallop beforehand in the Hunt Cup was 6min 3 l-ssec by Glenreigh in 1957. In similarly favourable conditions of fine weather and firm going. Glenreigh carried 9-11 and won by 25 lengths. Davett was a light-weight with 9-1. On Davett, the ninth favourite each way, the win and place returns were £2l 18s and £5 10s 6d. On the TAB. double. Davett and Tatua, the
dividend was £174 13s 6d for £l. The fine gallopers in the Jeilicoe Handicap ran a thrillmg race. In this tough weight-carrying assignment Tatua could hardly have met stiffer opposition.
Seven of the runners against him were so highly regarded as to be nominated for the Melbourne Cup or the Caulfield Cup. Others, like Bargoed, were in the race looking at top form. But from a furlong out it was Tatua all the way. Summer Regent, another of the candidates for Melbourne, had looked dangerous once they were in the run home With a furlong to go he was holding Tatua but he faded a little further on and kept second by only inches from Persian Star and Gauntlet.
Tatua had a length to spare in tiie finish and there was a nose between Summer Regent and Persian Star. Tatua was the each-way favourite. A burst of applause welcomed his return to the birdcage and continued as his rider, G. R. Edge, walked him to the unsaddling stalls. It was Tatua’s thirteenth win and ninth in the last 12 months. Conditions were excellent, the weather being sunny and mild and the ground only slightly soft. The attendance was 17,044 against 15,846 last year. Ran Together How Much, Davett and Musketeer ran together to the first jump in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup and Double Fling drifted. After four fences Musketeer was clear in front at a good pace from Johnny Dee, County, How Much and . Orelino. There was a short gap to Royal Count and Ringlock. Then came Hatch, Dawn Chorus, Davett, Tarqi and No Boy. Taking the rise near the five furlongs County joined Musketeer. Johnny Dee kept
leading the others with Orelino. How Much, Ringlock, Dawn Chorus and Hatch were next in a bunch.
County and Musketeer continued together with the pacemaking over fences down the middle. With about half tfie course to go Musketeer was out on his own by a length and a half from County, Johnny Dee and Dawn Chorus, which ran in close order just ahead of Davett. Hatch ran sixth and Ringlock seventh, well within range of the leaders. Johnny Dee was pressing Musketeer as they came to the hill again. Davett and Ring lock kept handy. Hatch and Royal Count (wide) were the next two.
In the next furlong Davett overtook the pacemakers Coming to the flat again he was a clear leader from No Boy, Johnny Dee, Musketeer, Ringlock and Royal Count. Davett had No Boy in attendance in the run to the last fence. Once over he was much the stronger and he came to the post three lengths clear. No Boy was just as easily second by four lengths from Johnny Dee. Four lengths away, How Much was fourth. After a similar gap came Ringlock (fifth). Orelino was a moderate sixth, followed by Dawn Chorus, Hatch, Musketeer and Royal Count. Dwelt At Start Craddock dwelt at the start of the Jeilicoe Handicap and before long Calm Comet, Persian Star and Sweetnotes were well behind. Dry Martini, Captain Lancaster and Royal Filou ran together in front to the seven furlongs from Stella Summa, Gay Parade and Sardis. Gauntlet, Tatua and Summer Regent were the next three, running close and a length clear of Persian Star, Foxskin, Elkayel, Mantovaniand Sybeau. After three furlongs Dry
Martini led with Sardis on his quarters. Captain Lancaster and Royal Filou were less than a length behind and clear of Stella Summa. Summer Regent and Gauntlet. There was a fair gap to Foxskin, leading Tatua and Gay Parade and a shorter break to Persian Star and Mantovan i.
Dry Martini. Royal Filou and Captain Lancaster came to the straight in close order and with Gauntlet just behind. Summer Regent was next, then came Tatua, going to the centre to put in his challenge. From the furlong Tatua was going better than any of his opponents. He went clear in the last 150 yards to score by a length. In the closest of finishes for second, third and fourth. Summer Regent nosed out Persian Star and Gauntlet (fourth). Stella Summa came fifth after a gap of two lengths. Gay Parade was sixth, then came Sybeau and Royal Filou (together), Captain Lancaster, Craddock, Beauzarni and Sweetnotes. In line, the tail-enders were Bargoed, Anywhere, Sardis, Dry Martini and Obrana. Results:—
