The Springston owner-trainer, R. H. Lakeda set a sound pace and raced to the straight on the inside of Adios Heather, with Trade Fair improving further out. Chief Hall, Fox Able, Garrison Royal, Johnny Thunder and Vanderford were handiest of the others Adios Heather, which had been forced three wide near the six furlongs, was in front inside the furlong, but she had no counter to the final challenge of Vanderford, which beat her by one length and a half. Adios Heather was a nose in front of Trade Fair, which showed speed after breaking and meeting trouble in the first 50 yards. Chief Hall was half a head back fourth, clear of Lakeda. with Fox Able, Kyle View and Johnny Thunder close up. „ Close Finish Deft followed up a deadheat for first with Avante a week earlier, with a narrow but impressive win in the Improvers’ Handicap, a race in which the first seven crossed the line with about a length between them. Young Dieman took the lead at the end of three furlongs, with Deft six places

back on the inside. The pace was fairly easy in the middle stages and Deft made no improvement until the three furlongs. She then moved up three places on the inner to follow Young Dieman. Safe Return. Golden Ego, Sun happy and Arizona Gal into the straight, with Carver Doon and Bobbinet handy. Deft could not get clear at the furlong and about 100 yards from the finish she pushed out. She finished with a powerful run and got up to win by a head. Young Dieman held second by half a neck from Golden Ego, which trailed . to the straight, with the same margin to Bobbinet, which finished fast alongside the winner.
