Poliutukawa’s Splendid Win
Pohutukawa returned to his best form with an outstanding win in the Winter Handicap on Saturday at Addington. He broke at the start and was almost last m a spread-out field soon after the start. He improved to be close to the lead racing to the straight and held off several determined challenges in the run home.
Pohutukawa is a seven-year-old gelding by Johnny Globe from Maid Myra. He is trained at Addington by R. J. Oliver, who races him in partnership with Mr G. M. Oliver. He was driven by R. Young Robert Medoro set a sound pace for the first four furlongs and a half before Reprimand took control. Reprimand led by three lengths in the middle stages. Our Own broke and Resistor was checked near the three furtongs. Shortly after Reprimand stopped badly and Flaming Way. With You and Poupette were checked. Oakleigh Lad took a short lead from Robert Medoro racing to the straight with Min Scott, Harbour Light Pohutukawa. Chances Are. Moon Boy and Free Return handy. Harbour Light broke at the furlong post
Pohutukawa continued his run to take the lead with about half a furlong left. He ran on well to beat Moon Boy by a length. Moon Boy showed that he had lost little of his dash and he could be a good winner again this season.
Min Scott, after having every chance, was a good third, a neck in front of Oakleigh Lad, with a nose to Free Return, a length and a half to Chances Are. two lengths to Robert Medoro and a gap to Harbour Light
