TRIBUTES PAID TO FAMOUS ALL BLACK

WAIROA, August 25. Tributes were paid to the 1924 All Black full-back, George Nepia. at a dinner in Wairoa on Saturday night. The occasion was the official release of Nepia’s book “I George Nepia.” One hundred guests, including 15 former All Blacks and New Zealand Maori representatives attended the dinner. Among the former All Blacks were Mark Nicholls and Loui Paewai.
The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) represented the Prime Minister and was the main speaker at the official function.
Other speakers were, the Mayor of Wairoa (Mr R. E. Shortt), Mark Nichols, the co-author of the book, Mr T. P. McLean, and Mr Alex Kirkpatrick, who represented the Hawke's Bay Rugby Union. Mr Nicholls told the gathering: “This famour full-back got on to the crest of a wave in 1924 and that wave is still here tonight.” Charitable organisations benefited from a sum in the vicinity of £7O from activities at the function. Two footballs, each autographed by the 15 former All Blacks and New Zealand Maori representatives as well
as a number of prominent Hawke's Bay players of past years were 'auctioned. One ball realised more than £32 and the other brought £27. Two photographs, one of the 1924 All Blacks and a portrait of George Nepia, were alio auctioned.
