Promotion Of Lamb
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) CANBERRA, August 20 New Zealand’s efforts to induce Japanese housewives to buy lamb will take time, according to the Australian Meat Board. The board, in its annual report presented to the Australian Parliament today, said New Zealand was using television and other mass media vigorously in Japan, to promote sales of lamb. The report said: “Indications so far suggest that it will take time to develop taste and demand to any significant degree." Commenting on growing Japanese imports of New Zealand mutton, the board said the Japanese Government was reported to be watching carefully the rising trend. Mutton imports had risen from 500 tons in 1959 to 22.000 tons in 1962, and in seven months to April 30, 1963, New Zealand shipments had passed 19.000 tons. A cable message from Buenos Aires says Argentina has banned exports of frozen beef to Britain because the 1963 export target of 235 000 tons has been reached. No further shipments will be made until recommended by an Anglo-Argentine committee in London.
