3M DOLLARS FOR LIBEL
Coach Wins Action (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) ATLANTA (Georgia), August 20. A former undveirsity football coach, Wally Butts, was today awarded more than 3 million dollars damages against the “Saturday Evening Post.” The magazine had said on March 23 that Butts, former coach and athletics director of Georgia University, Atlanta, had been involved in “fixing” a football game with the University of Alabama. After deliberating for eight hours, a Federal Court jury awarded Butts 3 million dollars “punitive damages” and 60.000 dollars general damages. Butts had claimed 10 million dollars from the Curtis Publishing Company, publishers of the magazine. The magazine quoted an insurance salesman saying he had overheard a telephone conversation between Buitts and the Alabama coach, Paul Bryant, in which the “fix” was said to have been revealed. Both Burtts and Bryant denied the story publicly, even before the magazine went on sale. Bryant has a 10 milliondollar libel suit pending against the magazine, which has announced it will appeal against the verdict in the Butts case.
