Otago Wins Universities Winter Tournament Again

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 21. With only the golf and ski-ing to be decided, Otago holds an unbeatable lead in the New Zealand Universities winter tournament in Dunedin. It will be Otago’s third consecutive win and its fifth since the tournament began in 1954.

Otago has won the badminton, women’s basketball, cross-country, and judo outright and has shared first place with Auckland in the soccer. Canterbury has won the shooting and the squash rackets, Victoria the men’s basketball and table tennis, and Auckland the women’s hockey. The present points position is: Otago, 60, 1; Victoria, 38, 2; Auckland, 33, 3; Canterbury, 29. 4; Massey, 7. 5: Lincoln 9, 6. Chess In the deciding match between Victoria and Otago, L. Amies and P. Low won their games by sacrificial attacks to give Otago the necessary points to win the tournament cup. Canterbury beat Auckland by 3 games to 1 and Victoria and Otago drew 2 games each. The final positions for the chess cup were: Otago 1, Victoria 2. Canterbury 3, Auckland 4 Billiards Otago won the combined billiards and snooker section, which was included in the programme as an expreiment this year and did not count for tournament points. The final team placings were: Otago 1, Canterbury 2, Victoria 3. The New Zealand Universities’ teams to play Otago are: billiards: D. Freeman (Otago), R. Furket (Victoria), K. Burke (Canterbury), R. Saddler (Auckland). Snooker: K. Ross (Otago), N. Chan (Canterbury), M. Matthews (Otago), R. McKenzie (Auckland). Badminton An Otago representative badminton team convincingly beat the New Zealand Universities’ side by 12 games (25 sets), to 4 games (9 sets).

Squash Rackets As well as winning the teams’ events. Canterburj' produced the finalists for the individual squash rackets championship. The final between the nation-ally-ranked M. J. Simons and R. Goodall reached a particularly high standard. Individual championship results were:— Semi-finals.—Simons beat R. Hawkes (Victoria), 9-0, 9-3, 9-3; Goodall beat G. Christie (Victoria), 9-5, 9-2. 9-1. Final: Simons beat Goodall, 9-4. 9-6 10-8. Judo After winning the teams section, Otago asserted its superiority in the judo by providing the finalists for the individual championship. In the final D. Cosgrove beat J. O'Toole. A match between the New Zealand Universities' team and an Otago representative team resulted in a draw, six bouts each. The Universities’ team was Cosgrove, O’Toole. Withers. McLean and Hing Sue (Canterbury). Sue was replaced by B. Symms (Canterbury). Basketball Victoria made sure of tournament points in the men’s basketball when it beat Auckland 59-53 to retain its unbeaten record. In a match for second place, Otago beat Canterbury. 43-32. Massey recorded its first win when it beat Lincoln 3228. Otago went through the women's section unbeaten when it scored a comfortable 34-23

win over Auckland, its nearest rival. With an easy win over Massey, Canterbury assured itself of third place. Results:— Men: Auckland beat Massey, 60-38; Otago beat Canterbury, 43-32; Massey beat Lincoln, 3228; Victoria beat Auckland, 5953. Women: Canterbury beat Massey, 47-10; Otago beat Auckland, 34-23. Cross-Country The following have been selected to run in the New Zealand Universities’ team against an Otago representative crosscountry team at Hancock Park on Saturday at 2.30 p.m.:—P. Welsh (Otago). K. McDell (Auckland). R. T. House (Auckland), R. Smart (Otaio). M. Casey (Victoria). D. McAllister (Otago), W. Henstock (Otago), emergency. Men’s Hockey By beating Auckland 4-0 the Otago men’s hockey team finished the tournament without having a goal scored against it. Results: Otago beat Auckland, 4-0; Canterbury beat Lincoln. 2-1; Massey beat Victoria, 3-2. Soccer First place in the soccer section was shared when the two unbeaten teams, Otago and Auckland, had a great duel on a sticky surface for a 2-all draw. The result was probably a fitting one. Victoria claimed the remaining tournament soccer points when it beat Canterbury 4-1. Results:—Auckland 2, Otago 2; Massey 2, Lincoln 2 : Auckland 3. Canterbury 0: Victoria 4, Canterbury 1; Otago won by default from Massey. Fencing By gaining first place in the men's foil and the men's epee, and by being placed second in the men's sabre and women's foil. Victoria had a convincing win in the fencing. Canterbury was placed second, and Otago third.
