‘BLACKMAIL REPLIES’
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NICE, Aug. 17. Offers of rewards in a Riviera newspaper in connexion with the British mail train robbery have brought a series of “blackmail-type replies.” A representative of Lloyd's agents in France, Mr W. Brinman, said tonight: “We have had only about half a dozen replies, and all these were people trying to make bargaining terms and get money on false pretences.” One of the replies from Marseilles, said: “I am willing to come to Nice from Marseilles if you are willing to book hotel accommodation for me, my wife and three children at your expense.” Another man from Marseilles cabled, telephoned and wrote to say he would be willing to give necessary information leading to the arrest of the gang responsible for the hold-up “if he was paid the money first.”
