UNIVERSITIES’ TOURNAMENT Rain And Cold Affect Early Contests

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 19. The New Zealand universities’ winter tournament got off to a bad start today when rain and cold temperatures hampered all outdoor sports. In particular, golf and hockey were affected by the bad weather. Waterlogged greens and soaked fairways practically washed out the morning round at Balmacewan.

Among the events contested today were soccer, badminton, indoor basketball, fencing, hockey, golf, smallbore rifle shooting, table tennis, squash and judo. Men’s Hockey Conditions at Logan Park did not favour good hockey in the first and second round matches. Rain fell throughout most of the first round m the morning and by the afternoon the grounds were a quagmire In the first round. Auckland beat Massey, 3-2. Victoria beat Can’erbury. 2-1, in a close contest, and Otago beat Lincoln. 1-0. in a very scrappy match. Only slight improvement was shown in the second round Auckland gained its second win when it beat Victoria, 2-0 Play was not constructive when Massey beat Lincoln. 3-1. Canterbury was unlucky to lose its captain and inside-left. M. Read through an injury just after the start of its match with Otago, which won, 3-0. Badminton Otago beat Victoria by 10 games to 6 in badminton, and Auckland beat Canterbury. 11-5. In the afternoon, Otago beat Canterbury, 10-6, and Victoria beat Auckland, 10-6. Squash Generally. the squash games were of an uneven quality but some fine Individ, ual performances kept interest. Orr (Canterbury) 76: P Amos (Canterbury) 79- Young, 80; Elder Strange 82 The three leading teams at the end of the day were Otago on 481 Canterbury 498 and Victoria 511. Men’s Basketball Auckland, led by M. Perkinson. was too strong for Lincoln in men’s basketball, and won. 38-26. Victoria scored a convincing 48-24 win over Massey, and Otago trounced Lincoln. 55 to 14.

Canterbury beat Massey, 80-41 41 in the afternoon round. Women’s Basketball Superior fitness and better combination gave Auckland an easy 37-11 win over Victoria. Canterbury, with sounder team-work, beat Victoria, 29-13. Women's Hockey Otago caused an upset when it beat Canterbury, last year’s champion, by 2 goals to 0, in the women’s hockey. Atrocious conditions prevented attractive hockey In the morning round, Canterbury beat a strong Victoria side. 3-0, and Auckland beat Massey, 2-1. Victoria showed a vast improvement in the afternoon to hold Auckland to a 1-all draw. The touring Australian Universities team beat Otago, 4-2, and Massey. 5-0. Table Tennis Auckland, the 1962 table tennis winner, began with a win over Massey by 15 games to 6. Victoria met plenty of opposition from Canterbury, but managed to score an 11-10 win, while Otago had a more comfortable win over Lincoln by 14 games to 7. Chess Auckland drew with Victoria, 2-all, in the first round of the chess: Otago was leading Canterbury, 2-1, when the game between M. Taylor and L. Amies was adjourned. Billiards Canterbury won two of the three billiards matches played yesterday. Otago beat Auckland, Canterbury beat Victoria, and Auckland. Snooker Otago won all three of its snooker matches, beating Auckland. Canterbury and Victoria, all of which won one game each. Otago beat Auckland, Auckland beat Canterbury, Otago beat Canterbury, Otago beat Victoria, Canterbury beat Victoria, Victoria beat Auckland. Soccer Unusually high scoring marked the early soccer games. Auckland, last year’s winner, thrashed Lincoln. 11-6; Victoria, in an open game, overwhelmed Massey, 8-1: and Otago scored a 3-0 win over Canterbury. In the afternoon round Otago scored a clear win over Lincoln, by 7 goals to 1. Auckland scored a notable 4-0 win over Victoria.
