CITY The Western left-back, I. Laby, produced the one movement in this televised match that should be remembered. In the midst of a welter of miskicks, bad passes and weak ball control, the stockily-built Laby scored Westerns second goal after a 55-yard run and a 35yarc shot. Laby intercepted an intended to the City right-wing. H Nelson sprinted down the touch-line, resisted a tackle by A. Westwood, moved inside, and then fired a fierce shot against the far post and into the net. It was a goal from out of the blue—and nothing that had gone before or that came afterv ards approached its coolness or efficiency Western’s first goal was a chapter of mistakes. The referee. Mr J Sheffield, was hasty tn awarding a corner when he was ir no position to judge and against the adviee of his linesman the kick was weakly

Only the two sets of defenders rose above the waste, and it was fitting that Laby. a full-back, should finally show the forwards how it could be done. The pity was that he did not do it earlier N. Tncre was little excitement dunig the first half, with both sides scoring as a result of e-ch other’s errors. Shamrock gained a 2-1 lead early in the second spell, and dominated p.ay for a long period. Taeii, with 20 minutes to play, New Bn., ton's young outside left, G. bp.ars, rejuvenated the game with an excellent goal. New Brighton then staged a concerted attack. First, insideleft D. Shuck seemed certain to score, but shot wide with the goal at his mercy. Minutes later the centre-forward, I. Hunter, broke through, but Shamrock's goalkeeper, K. Flintham, saved magnificently. Seconds before the final whistle Shamrock a,so were awarded a penally, and J. Killlck siammed the ball home to make the score 3-3 at full time. There were few scoring chances during the extra time periods. but New Brighton gained the vital territorial advantage narrowly. The Shamrock forward line played prettily at times, but could not m.tch the enthusiasm or energy of the New Brighton attackers. Forwards who impressed most were D Sansbury for Shamrock and J Kemp for New Brighton. The consistent R Foley was the bgst wing-half on either side. A. right full-back for New Brighton, A.
