BASKETBALL Canterbury’s Hard Task To Win At Timaru
The Canterbury senior representative team narrowly beat South Canterbury, 33-28, at Timaru on Saturday in the annual Lane Cup fixture. The winning margin of five goals, not easily achieved, was fitting tribute to the splendid play of South Canterbury, a second grade team at the New Zealand tournament as against Canterbury's major status.
The weather was cold but calm and the Canterbury forwards, L. Price and J. Kimber, well supported by the centres. A Boelee and H. Hutton, competently penetrated South Canterbury's defences for Canterbury to lead by 6 goals to 1. '
When the Canterbury defence infringed, South Canterbury goaled and with swift passing and good team-work brought its score within one goal of Canterbury. Spirited defensive play by Canterbury’s C. Brown, L Shaw and S. Langrope broke up South Canterbury's play and Canterbury adopted sound tactics to retain the advantage until half-time, when it led by 19-11. There was little between the teams in this spell and play was fast, Interesting and at times, exciting. Canterbury's play from set moves was most erratic, and South Canterbury's K. O'Donnell, defending with skill and tenacity, prevented the Canterbury forwards attaining cohesion, and her fine saves allowed South Canterbury to retain the initiative for long spells.
Splendid shooting by F. Rawston gave the home team further encouragement, but the fierce resistance offered by Canterbury’s experienced players, particularly A. Boelee. C. Brown. L. Shaw and L. Price, successfully broke up South Canterbury’s attack and enabled Canterbury to keep intact its fivegoal advantage. Referee Mrs R. Cosgriff
