BIG DAMAGE BY FIRE

Lucerne Plant Outbreak (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, August 18. Damage amounting to thousands of pounds was caused to the Meadowbank Lucerne Company’s £20.001 Bushmere property, on the outskirts of Gisborne, when fire broke out in the dehydrating plant on Friday night. The Gisborne Fire Brigade and a water tender from Manutuke were called and in 20 minutes had the fire under control. The firemen were engaged for three hours extinguishing small pockets of smouldering dust. It is expected the plant will have to be dismantled and examined, but the company's chairman of directors (Mr T A. N. Corson) said the supply of lucerne would not be delayed. Mr Corson said it was the biggest lucerne manufacturing plant in New Zealand, being the only one of its kind and especially imported from England.
