East German Sports Festival

Sir, —“The Press” has indeed done a service to peace, although perhaps unaware of it. On page 17 of Saturday's issue there appears a photograph of an East German sports festival, and displayed prominently and composed of athletes wearing different coloured uniforms there are some letters on a flag background. Three of the letters are Russian, and their English equivalent is M.1.R., meaning peace. Also the next two letters are F.R., standing for Frieden, meaning friendship in German. The combination stands for “peace and friendship” which visitors to these countries may see displayed anywhere. Athletes everywhere see the folly of war, and this is very true of East German athletes who are too young to have experienced some of its horrors.—Yours, etc.. August 18, 1963. p JA.
