TITLES AT BLENHEIM
Five Wins For Canterbury Canterbury players won all five titles at the Marlborough table tennis championships at Blenheim on Saturday. M. A Cox won the men’s singles. Mrs M. J Shadbolt the women's singles. H P Holt won the men’s doubles with G. W. Makinson and the mixed doubles with Miss F. Inglis, and Misses Inglis and J. Rich won the women’s doubles. The men's championship gave Cox his first singles title. His opponent, J. Taylor (Marlborough) did most of the attacking but Cox, the steadier player, won in four sets. The women's singles final between the South Island champion, Mrs Shadbolt, and the Canterbury champion. Miss Inglis. was a disappointing match. Both players concentrated on keeping errors to a minimum and although Mrs Shadbolt won in three sets there was only two points difference in each. Results of semi-finals were:— Men's Singles.—J. Taylor (Marlborough) beat N. B Radford (Canterbury) 21-16, 22-20, 14- 21-23 . 23-21; M. A. Cox (Canterbury) beat H. P. Holt (Canterbury) 13-21 21-7, 21-14, 21-13. Final: Cox beat Taylor, 21-13. 21-19, 18-21. 21-19. Men's Doubles.—Holt and G. W. Makinson (Canterbury) beat R. Morris and R. Sheridan (Marlborough) 21-18 21-8. 21-18; Radford and Cox (Canterbury) beat A. Wright and Taylor (Marlborough), 11-21. 21-11. 15- 21-14, 21-13. Final: Holt and Makinson beat Radford and Cox. 20-22. 21-16, 21-12, 21-10. Women's Singles.—Miss F. Inglis (Canterbury) beat Miss J Ward-Holmes (Nelson). 21-12, 21- 21-15; Mrs M. J. Shadholt (Canterbury) beat Miss M Patchett (Nelson), 21-10, 21-13. 22- 21-12. Final: Mrs Shadbolt beat Miss Inglis, 26-24, 22-20. 22-20. Women’s Doubles.—Misses M and J Ward-Holmes (Nelson) beat Mrs N Perry (Marlborough) and Mrs Shadbolt. 21-18. 21-9. 21-10: Misses Inglis and J. Rich (Canterbury) beat Miss L. Borck and Miss A. Fowke (Marlborough), 21-17 23-21. 21- Final: Misses Inglis and Rich beat Misses M and J Ward-Holmes. 19-21 21-5. 21-15, 22Mixed Doubles.—Holt and Miss Inglis beat Radford and Miss Fowke. 10-21 19-21 21-18. 21- 21-15; Taylor and Miss J* Ward-Holmes beat Makinson and Miss Rich. 21-19 21-18. 17-21. 22- Final: Holt and Miss Inglis heat Taylor and Miss WardHolmes 21-10. 21-13 14-21. 5-21. 21-16.
