CANADA’S H-BOMBS

U.S. Retains Custody (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) OTTAWA, August 17. The United States yesterday armed Canada with nuclear weapons. Americans retain custody of warheads stocked with Canadian forces. Firing of them will be a joint responsibility, as both n,anions will have to agree to use them. “With custody remaining with the United States, the arrangement does not add to the numbers of governments having nuclear weapons at their independent disposal,” said the Canadian Prime Mln-( ister, Mr Pearson. Mr Pearson said a "hotline,” to provide almoet-in-•tanrtameous communication between him and President Kennedy, would probably be set up. If Canada ever desired to repudiate the agreement, “we would write another Note,” he said. The Canadian Government —as well as the NATO, alliance— is making “a most complete review” of defence policies, Including the nuclear role. The Nuclear Warheads Agreement would not inhibit Canadian efforts for international disarmament, Mr Pearson said.
