Sir Winston's Haircut
(From the “South African Digit"] QIR Winston Churchill, once in 1899, had a haircut and shave in a Pretoria barber shop while he was a prisoner in the Staats Model School during the South African War. He left without paying and escaped the next day. Now 64 years later, a report from Lagos said last month, that a Nigerian building cantractor, Mr Samuel
Jaiye, an admirer of Sir Winston, had sent Mr Charles Welgemoed, the present owner of the barber shop 50c to cover the debt—3sc more than necessary as compensation for having had to wait so long for the settlement. “I have not received the money yet, but I will most certainly send Sir Winston a receipt when ft arrives,’* Mr Welgemoed said. In Monte Carlo a spokesman for Sir Winston said that neither he nor Sir Winston had ever heard of the story.
Mr Philip Spamon, a former professional dancer, hotel proprietor, and Durban carnival organiser, who introduced the tango to South Africa more than 50 years ago, has died in Durban at the age of 92.
