Lake Manapouri

Sir,—lt would be practicable to develop Manapour! power to 520.000 kw. with hardly any damage, and to let ComaLco have its 500.000 kw. at that stage. Meanwhile. Benmore will bring in power for Wellington, Surely Aviemore. instead of being delayed, could be allowed to go ahead to provide the next stage for the grid, thus leaving Manapouri undamaged for a few more years. The Government is rushing to commit New Zealand to the “maximum damage plan" with both lakes raised. Is the Government afraid that common sense might eventually prevail unless the scheme is pushed past toe "point of no return” as soon as possible? —Yours, etc.. ARTHUR LUSH. August 16. 1963.
