Waimakariri Bridge
Sir,—l was shown a copy of toe Waimakariri River Trust Act when it was passed by Parliament in 1923 or 1924. One of toe stated objectives of the River Trust, inherited. I suppose, by toe Catchment Board, was “to prevent toe flooding from the river at toe lower end of Coutts Island.’’ To build at this very spot a 1360-foot bridge across a 1760-foot channel, the balance being a solid bank jutting out into the river 200 feet at each end of the bridge, is surely not carrying out one of toe reasons for the existence of the Catchment Board. If the majority of members cannot see what will happen in toe next big flood, perhaps Mr Wright would consider applying for an injunction to prevent this threat to toe safety of the district he represents. His costs would be forthcoming from grateful residents in the area from Belfast to Brooklands.— Yours, etc., OLD-TIMER. August 16, 1963.
