TOWN SUPPLY HERDS

As Free Of T.B. As Possible (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 15. All town supply herds were now under test and the national milk supply was as free of tuberculosis as it was possible to be, the annual meeting of the Town Milk Producers’ Federation was told today. The supply was as good as anywhere in the world, a report on compulsory tuberculosis testing said. Eradication of bovine tuberculosis was a major factor. Only one cow in 84 among town supply herds showed a positive reaction now\ compared with one in 10 in 1956. Future protection of dairy stock depended largely on maintaining adequate control until the disease was completely eradicated. Cattle were highly susceptible because tuberculosis reaction was so low. The disease could spread rapidly if it regained a foothold. One delegate remarked on the need for cleanliness in trucks and railway waggons, which could infect tuberculo-sis-free cows if those with the disease had been carried in them.

Goodwill Visit. The French frigate. Commandant Riviere, arrived at Auckland on Thursday on a goodwill visit which will last until Monday.—(P.A.)
