CONCERT AT UNIVERSITY

Strings, Flute, And Piano

The concert in the University Hall on Thursday afternoon began with Raymond Page and Maurice Till playing the Sonata in F minor by Brahms for viola and piano The strong main theme of the first movement rang out boldly with undoubting affirmation from both instruments, and the meditative section in the middle, so tenderly and expressively interpreted, came as a peaceful preparation for what folr lowed and indicated the mood in which the movement ended. Mr Page has splendid control of the viola, and produces an elegant and singing tone, richly resonant, and capable of many subtle shadings and changes. This mellow-sounding and shining tone was particularly beautiful in the gentlymoving second movement and in the thoughtful allegretto grazioso. His playing showed what a grand solo instrument the viola is when it is handled with such skill. There was a sunny happiness and exhilarating movement in the final vivace Just at the beginning of the work it seemed as though the piano part might overweigh the. solo, but balance was soon adjusted. Mr Till played with verve and dramatic fire, giving great wealth of sound and clear shape to the music.

A trio for flute, viola, and ‘cello by Roussel followed, played by Overda and Raymond Page, and Leonard Feldman. The first movement seemed like gentle fountains playing with the wind blowing the spray in this direction and that. There were fascinating sounds blending in splendid balance and driven along with lively rhythmic lilt. The second section was reflective and somewhat inwardly perturbed in spirit. Long phrases were sustained, and enriched with varying nuances. It has a strangely beautiful effect. The last movement was much more carefree and has a sprightly dance effect with sophisticated humour. In the middle there was an idyllic mood for a while before the carnival fun broke out again. The playing was superbly controlled and imbued with life —CF.B.
